After a dispute with his priest over his infant son's funeral, Hunne sought to use the English common law courts to challenge the church's authority. In response, church officials arrested him for trial in an ecclesiastical court on the capital charge of heresy. RMP20HD8–The execution of Archbishop Richard Scope in York following a rebellion against King Henry IV on June 8th, 1405. in 1405, Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, Thomas Mowbray, Earl of Norfolk and Richard Scrope, Archbishop of York rebelled against excessive taxation, maltreatment of the Church and the clergy, and corruption in the King’s household. They raised an army of common people in Yorkshire, but stood them down when Ralph Neville, Earl of Westmorland, assured Scrope and Mowbray that their grievances would be met. But Westmorland had them imprisoned, then beheaded outside the city.

In 1525, Henry VIII was infatuated with Anne Boleyn and dissatisfied that his marriage to Catherine had produced no surviving sons. Pope Clement VII refused to annul the marriage, so Henry defied him by assuming supremacy over religious matters. In 1533 their marriage was consequently declared invalid and Henry married Anne on the judgement of clergy in England, without reference to the pope. Banished from she lived and died at Kimbolton Castle in 1536 of cancer.
