More information:

Garter snakes were long thought to be non-venomous but recent findings show they produce a mild neurotoxin which helps immobilize their small prey. They have enlarged teeth at the back of their mouths and deliver the toxin by chewing. They are harmless to humans although bites can become swollen and itchy.
