Thomas McMahon, 40, who is serving a life sentence for the killing of Lord Mountbatten in 1979, is taken from the High Court in Dublin under heavy security after he fired a shot from a pistol. McMahon of Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, said to be the IRA commander of high-security Portlaoise prison, had been taken from the jail to the courthouse for day two of his action for damages from the Irish state for injuries allegedly received at Portlaoise in 1983.
