In 1990, Benthem Crouwel Architects started work on converting the disused Thomas de Beer wool spinning mill in the centre of Tilburg, dating from the 1930s, into the 6, 000 sq m De Pont Museum of Contemporary Art. Their aim was to preserve the original character of the building: interventions were kept to a minimum, and services kept out of sight. At its heart is a vast exhibition space, lit by twelve overhead skylights. The Museum opened in 1992; an extension housing an auditorium and additional galleries was added in 2002.
