British film director Peter Yates, best-known for 'Bullitt', the 1968 American thriller starring Steve McQueen, has died at the age of 81, his agent said in London on 10 January 2011. Yates made his debut as a director in 1963 with the Cliff Richard film 'Summer Holiday', and went on to make more than a dozen films, including the 1973 downbeat thriller 'The Friends Of Eddie Coyle'. Yates was nominated for Oscars in 1979 and 1983 but never won. He died in London on Sunday after a long illness, his agent said. Photo: Dieter Klar
