(dpa) - The 'wedding couple' Christin (L) and William (2nd from L) are escorted by inviter Simon and bridesmaid Jasmin (R), as all children are clad in the traditional clothing for the Sorbian 'children's wedding' (Ptaci kwas) in Sielow, eastern Germany, 29 January 2004. In the past, an official inviter (Hochzeitsbitter), clad in fancy clothes decorated with ribbons and flowers, would go door-to-door, extending a personal rhyming invitation to attend the upcoming nuptials. During the 'children's wedding' children sing the song 'Ein Vogel wollte Hochzeit machen' (a bird wanted to have a wedding) and put a plate on the windowsill. Next morning they find sweets on the plate - the birds thanking them for feeding them during winter. The traditional Sorbian ceremony celebrates the approaching end of winter. The Sorbs descend from a Slavonic tribe which settled around 600 in the area between the rivers Elbe/Saale and Oder/Queiss. Today, the Sorbs are an ethnic minority in Germany and account for well over half the current population of the region.
