Upal is a small town in western Xinjiang about 50 km southwest of Kashgar on the Karakoram Highway, which follows the old Silk Road route from China to Pakistan. Upál in Sanskrit means 'a noble stone' from which the English word opal is derived. The Uyghur are a Turkic-speaking ethnic group living in Eastern and Central Asia and live primarily in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the People's Republic of China.
