Eton, UK. 18th July, 2017. Swan Uppers depart from Eton Bridge at the beginning of the second day of the Swan Upping census. Swan Upping is an annual five-day ceremonial swan census requiring the gathering, marking and releasing of all cygnets, or mute swans, on the River Thames. It dates back more than 800 years, to when the Crown claimed ownership of all mute swans. The second day of the census takes place between Windsor Bridge and Marlow Lock.
