Former BBC reporter Martin Bell at the Brentwood Theatre in Brentwood, Essex announces that he will stand as an independent MP in the Conservative-held constituency of Brentwood and Ongar in Essex at the General Election on June 7. * Mr Bell, who successfully became MP for Tatton, in Cheshire at the 1997 election after defeating Conservative Neil Hamilton, announced his decision to stand in Essex in an election leaflet released at lunchtime. Mr Bell is in front of a caricature of himself.
