Gad’s Hill Place, Higham, above Rochester, Kent, the home of novelist Charles Dickens from 1857 until his death in1870; aspired to in childhood “if he would only work hard enough”, bought 36 years later. Here he was photographed on the porch and the lawn with his children, and here he wrote “A Tale of Two Cities”, “All the Year Round”, “Our Mutual friend”, “Great Expectatons”, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”.
