Berlin was founded on a swampy area and the ground-water level is quite high . When a new building is being constructed in the centre of Berlin, the foundations reach into the water and the site is constantly flooded. The pink pipes are used to pump the water away from the building site and the water drains into the Spree River or anearby canal.
