This outstanding example of a Gothic Revival suburban house was built for William Pendleton in the New Brighton section of Staten Island. William S. Pendleton (1795–1879) was a lithographer (Nathaniel Currier was an apprentice with him), owned a local ferry company, and participated in a wide variety of entrepreneurial efforts. He bought property along what is now Pendleton Place around 1850 and lived here in retirement from 1855 until 1875 with his wife, the former widow Margaret Clark Snow, and three children. William P. Raynor (1837–1911), his wife, the former Mary E. Howe (1838–96), and their son Eberhard (1865–1937) were the second occupants of this house. He headed the largest envelope company in America, established by his father Samuel in 1856.
