According to local folklore, during the Napoleonic Wars a French ship was wrecked off the coast of Hartlepool, the only survivor being a Monkey, dressed in a sailors uniform. The Monkey was tried and found guilty of spying and sentenced to death by hanging. Hence the term "Monkey Hanger" given to residents of Hartlepool.
