A British Airways aircraft taking-off from London's Heathrow airport passes the control tower which is to be decommissioned in 2006, by which time it will have been in use for more than 50 years. The building is 38.5m (127 feet 6 inches) tall and was required to give a good view of the airfield. Last year it handled 463, 605 movements involving 64.3 million passengers. Its record day was on June 28, 2002, with 1, 365 movements. The Visual Control Room (VCR) at the top holds five controllers, their supervisor and four support staff. The new 87 metre tall Control Tower - effectively a five storey building on top of an 18 storey mast and more than double the height of the existing one - should be operational in 2006, with the old Visual Control Room retained initially for contingencies.
