Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), American Congregationalist minister at Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, NY was a vocal abolitionist during the Civil War and a supporter of the women's suffrage movement. He was the son of Lyman Beecher, a well known evangelist of the day, and the brother Harriet Beecher Stowe, the author of the abolitionist novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. Henry was also known for raising money to purchase slaves from captivity, sending rifles to abolitionists, his championing of Darwin's theory of evolution, and as the defendant in a highly publicized 1875 adultery trial.
