The A3 Hindhead Tunnel, at 1.2 miles, is the UK’s longest underland road tunnel. The twin bored tunnel runs under the Devil's Punch Bowl Site of Special Scientific Interest, and will allow both sides of Hindhead Common to reunite once the old A3 is closed. The £371m project will complete the dual carriageway link between London and Portsmouth and remove a major source of congestion at the Hindhead traffic lights. It opened in July 2011 within budget and ahead of schedule.
