Degenerative arthritis is an articular ailment characterized by degenerative lesions along with proliferation of bone tissue. It usually affects those joints in which the mechanical constraints are greatest : the knee, hand, hip and spinal column. This ailment generally develops after age 60. Three times as many women as men are affected. X-rays are used to assess the seriousness of the lesions. Pictured here : bilateral degenerative arthritis of the hip.
