Historic Smithills Hall in Bolton, Lancashire. The oldest part of the house is the Great Hall, which was built in the late 14th century. It was the scene of the examination of George Marsh, the Protestant martyr, who was burnt at the stake in Chester in 1555, and for a long time the house has been a place of pilgrimage.
