Indira Gandhi was the only daughter of Jawar Lal Nehru, First Prime Minister of India. She first served as Chief of Staff for her father and was elected Congress President in 1959. She was known for her political ruthlessness, went to war with Pakistan and created Bangla Desh, imposed emergency in 1975, she lost power after emergency was lifted in 1977 but regained in 1980 and became Prime Minister again. She was assassinated in her residence by her security guard named Beant Singh on 31 October, 1984.
