Death or Injury caused by falling from height is the most frequent cause of accidents in the construction industry. Where working at height is unavoidable and it is impossible or difficult to use an active form of restraint such as a safety harness, passive systems such as air mats (also called air bags) are employed. The air mat system is made up of a series of interconnected mats that are available in a wide range of sizes allowing the system to fit almost any floor area. Once inflated by a low-pressure pump, it runs continuously dispersing air throughout the system to provide a surface specifically designed to both absorb and contain the impact of a fall. Air mats are generally recommended for fall heights not exceeding 3.5 metres.
