This is a photo from the corridors of the Castello del Molo, a Venetian castle built into the sea at the entrance of the old harbour. It is called by the locals by its turkish name "Koule". It took its final form from 1523-1540 during Venetian occupation of Crete. There was an older castle in the same position that collapsed by an earthquake in 1303. Today it is preserved in an almost perfect condition. It is open to the public and during summer several cultural events take place there. The castle was on of the shooting locations for the biography film "El Greco", directed by Yiannis Smaragdis. El Greco (real name "Dominikos Theotokopoulos") was born in Fodele, a small village, about 35 km west of Heraklion.
