Italy Abruzzi Atri landscape with Natural Reserve of the Calanchi The Reserve was established in 1995 where the EU a few years earlier had already identified a site of Community Importance (SCI), which contains forms of erosion here assume a striking appearance: the badlands, also known as Dante or scrimoni pits are produced by the runoff of 'water on clay and marl were devoid of forest cover. The protected area covers 380 hectares on a hillside between 100 and 500 meters from the valley of the river Piomba the Hill of Justice. The badland morphologies are mainly distributed on the left side of the hydrographic basin of the river Piomba, which runs just south of the study area with a roughly NW-SE trend. Only the northernmost sector of the Reserve lies instead in the highest part of the small river basin Calvano.
