Michael Smith, who is accused of stabbing Coronation Street actor John Savident, arrives at Manchester Crown Court 19/06/01. Smith's trial is due to start at Manchester Crown Court. * Smith, 28, of Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, is accused of wounding Mr Savident, 62, who plays Fred Elliot, with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm on 1/12/00. He is also charged with robbing him of a wallet, credit cards, keys, a watch, a ring, money clip, an invitation card and cash on the same date. Smith denies both charges. 10/12/02 Michael Smith, who has been jailed for seven years after being convicted of stabbing Coronation Street star John Savident in the neck after meeting him at a gay bar. Reporting restrictions were lifted, after Savident's attacker, Michael Smith, 30, was convicted of an unrelated robbery at Manchester Crown Court.Smith, of Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, was jailed in September after being convicted of attacking Savident, who is better known as Weatherfield's butcher Fred Elliott, in the early hours of December 1, 2000. 21/01/03 : Michael Smith who stabbed Coronation Street star John Savident and who said he was sorry for everything he had done and was "scared" to think he could have killed the actor. Mr Smith is now serving life in prison for two other violent robberies he committed since attacking Savident, better known as TV butcher Fred Elliott. Today, he spoke for the first time of how he attacked the actor, leaving him bleeding profusely in his luxury Manchester home in December 2000.
