Kaiser Wilhelm (William) II, German emperor, inspects Austro-Hungarian troops on the East Galician front, New Year's Day, 1916. At the Kaiser's left is General Count von Bothmer. Wilhelm was the grandson of Queen Victoria of England, during World War I. His overbearing character clashed with Bismarck, whom he dismissed in 1890. His actions contributed to the formation of the Triple Entente (Alliance). They also were in part responsible for the outbreak of World War I. His abdication was declared a prerequisite for the peace negotiation by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson. He abdicated in 1918.
