RFWA270C–A Kemp's Ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys kempii), the smallest and most endangered sea turtle in the world, is seen swimming in a pool at the Turtle Hospital in the Florida Keys at Marathon, Florida, USA. Officially called the Hidden Harbor Marine Environmental Project, that facility has rescued, rehabilitated and then released more than 1,500 sick and injured sea turtles since opening in 1986. Kemp's Ridley turtles live primarily in the Gulf of Mexico and faced extinction until given federal protection by the U.S. and Mexican governments in 1977.
