Mangyongdae is situated a little over 10 km southwest of downtown Pyongyang.
Preserved at Mangyongdae are many relics and mementoes associated with Kim Il Sung childhood. The old home, still a reminder of generations-old poverty, contains his inkstone and desk, as well as his family's household goods. This is the official speech. But Kim Il Sung was not born there in fact. North Korea, like any other communist country, features a number of organizations dedicated to providing free-time activities to the young. The Young Pioneers organization is the main one. The Young Pioneers Corps closely resembles traditional scouting, except for its state-issued and military-like character. It includes teaching of the Republic’s values and, as always, personality cult to the Eternal President Kim Il-Sung, to the deceased leader Kim Jong-Il, and to the current leader Kim Jong-Un. The children usually wear a red handkerchief. The movement values sport, outdoor capacities, and group socialization: children will walk and play on the street after school, but are asked to stay with friends of their own age and gender.
