There was a time when some parakeets were kept as pets and either escaped or were set free in London. They have survived in the wild and now live in many London parks, breeding in the wild and admired by many visitors. I enjoy feeding these birds with sunflower seeds and they are tame enough to land on your hand to delicately eat the seeds with their tongues. I see them as birds that have prevailed in the face of adversity, but that have also found a new habitat to thrive in. They are immigrants, stow-aways, or refugees, if you like, that make London a more colourful and happy place to live in.
