Leshan Buddha Sichuan Province China with Leshan city town across river in background. At 230 feet or 71 metres high the Grand or Great Buddha or Dafo at Leshan in the Sichuan Province of China is the world's largest Buddhist sculpture. It was cut into the orange sandstone cliffs of Lingyun Shan at the confuence of the Min, Dadu and Qingyi Rivers and completed in 803AD. It was the idea of a monk named Haitong in 713AD to use the rock rubble to fill the dangerous river shoals in front of the statue. The statue really comes alive in the bright sunshine of a rare clear day. JMH3240
