May 06, 2007 - Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation - The Triumphal Arch at the General Staff Building in Palace Square, Saint Petersburg. In 1917 the Bolshevik leader Lenin arrived from exile to overthrow the regime of the imperialist Tsar Nicholas Romanov sparking the Russian Revolution. What followed were 74 years of Communist Totalitarian rule under the Soviet Union. Communism finally came to an end in 1991 when it was replaced by democracy and a free market economy. The intervening years have been turbulent as the Russian economy has been dogged by instability and government corruption. Though stability has returned under President Putin, personal freedoms have been sacrificed as the state has reassumed control of the media, and criticism of the Kremlin is no longer tolerated.
