More information:

Melbourne-based, world-renowned performing arts company, Strange Fruit create and perform unique, large- scale visual spectacles that fuse theatre, dance and circus using their unique, trademark flexible sway-pole apparatus.Since the company’s inception in 1994, Strange Fruit have performed at over 600 international festivals in over 52 countries, to well over 5 million people.Regardless of age, language or cultural background, Strange Fruit are dedicated to producing invigorating and challenging performances in highly accessible contexts throughout the world. With a world-renowned repertoire that celebrates a wide variety of themes and stories, the company has achieved near-cult status in almost every continent across the globe. Performing regularly at festivals, special events and private functions, bending and swaying their sublime, hypnotic beauty is truly remarkable and must be experienced to appreciate its full effect. We believe that free performance in the public domain is an essential contribution to contemporary cultural ecology and we aim to generate a celebratory atmosphere that draws audiences together and leaves them elated and transformed by the experience.Originally based on the image of a field of wheat swaying in the breeze, the performers perch atop five metre flexible poles like wheat in a breeze. The 14 foot flexible poles’ extreme strength and flexibility allow the performer to bow to impossible angles, swaying back and forth in a hypnotising dance as the audience looks up in wonder.
