Joan Falconio, the mother of Peter Falconio who is missing in Australia, with her son Nicholas at their home near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Family members fear for the whereabouts of Peter, 28, after he and his girlfriend Joanne Lees, 27, were attacked. * in the Australian outback. Members of the family were preparing to fly to the scene of the attack. 30/07/2001 Joan Falconio, the mother of Peter Falconio who is feared shot dead in the Australian Outback, hit back at doubts surrounding his girlfriend's version of events. Peter, 28, and his girlfriend Joanne Lees, 27, were ambushed by a man near the remote township of Barrow Creek as they travelled towards Darwin in their camper van on July 14. Mr Falconio, of Hepworth, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, has not been seen since. Miss Lees, who reported hearing a gunshot, told police the attacker then tied her up and threw her into the back of a utility vehicle. Her claims have been disputed by some sections of the media, who have asked why only Miss Lee's footprints were found at the scene and have questioned how she managed to free her arms. But Joan, today defended the young tourist's story.
