The Monument to the Discoveries in Belém was built in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. Henry is represented, standing at the head of the line of heroic figures, gazing out to sea and holding a sailing ship. Also shown from left to right: Nuno Gonçalves, Gomes Eanes de Zurara, Pêro da Covilhã, Jacome of Majorca, Pêro Escobar, Pedro Nunes, Gil Eanes, Pêro de Alenquer (behind), João Gonçalves Zarco and Ferdinand the Saint.
