The newly appointed Dean of Westminster Abbey, Canon John Hall, 57, in College garden, in the grounds of Westminster Abbey today. PRESS ASSOCIATION Photo. Picture date: Monday September 19 2006. Canon John Hall, 57, the Church of England's chief education officer, has been appointed as the new Dean of Westminster Abbey. A former teacher who later trained for the Church of England ministry, Canon Hall succeeds the Very Rev Dr Wesley Carr, who retired in February. Westminster Abbey is classed as a "royal peculiar", meaning that it is independent of normal Anglican diocesan control and answerable to the Queen. See PA Story RELIGON Abbey.
