Nuestra Senora del Refugio, a church next to the town square in Guerro Viejo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. The village of Guerrero was inundated in 1953 when Falcon dam was completed on the Rio Grande River. Several other towns were also evacuated and residents moved to new villages built on higher ground. Guerrero is notable for its beautiful sandstone architecture, which is reminiscent of ancient Rome. Sandstone was quarried from a site north of the city and highly skilled stone masons built a city that became a tourist destination for wealthy travelers from Europe, South America and Asia. After many years of drought the water of Falcon Lake receded leaving much of the city on dry ground. Friends of Nuestra Senora del Refugio organized to restore this exquisite church and had competed much of the work when hurricanes and heavy rains refilled the lake in 2008. Most of the restoration has been destroyed and the church again sits underwater.
