Numa Pompilius was the second legendary king of Rome (following Romulus, the founder and who with his twin Remus had been suckled by the she-wolf). The ancient Roman historian Livy wrote that Numa said he consulted with the nymph Egeria nightly (pictured here in this 1882 illustration) about how to establish religious rites in Rome and with his people.
