The Old Castlemaine Gaol, built 1856-61, at the height of the gold rush in colonial Victoria, Australia, was based on London's 1842 Pentonville Prison. The Heritage-listed building, decommissioned in 1990, is now subject to a controversial redevelopment proposal.
