Old Jinuo man smoking pipe, Jinuo Luoke (Jinuo Shan), Jinghong, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China. The Jinuo or Jino ethnic minority lives mainly in the Jinuo Town of Jinghong County, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province. The Jinuo had a population of 20, 899 in a 2000 census. They speak the Jinuo language which has no written characters. The expression Jinuo refers to an ethnic group that respects the mother's brother as a prominent person in the family. This ethnic minority are also known as the Youle folk due to their homeland in the Youle mountains. The Jinuo are farmer-hunter-gatherers. They plant Pu’er or Puer tea, rice, maize, bananas, papayas, and even cotton. Jinuo men, however, remain hunters at heart.
