The engraving is of a painting by William T Richards (1833-1905) an American painter who studied briefly in Europe and settled in Germantown, Philadelphia, USA. He painted landscapes with great attention to detail. He moved to Newport and started to paint sea views and coastal scenes. Later he returned to painting landscapes. He lived in England for two years and painted English scenes. He was awarded the Academy’s Gold Medal of Honour by the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, On the Wissahickon shows a rural scene with trees, flowing water, and shimmering light.
