More information:

Oxford Cathedral is also the Chapel of Christ Church, the largest college of Oxford University, which has produced more Prime Ministers than any other Oxford College. The cathedral stands on the site of St Frideswide’s Priory which was usurped by Cardinal Wolsey to enable him to found a college in Oxford. Once Wolsey had fallen out of favour with Henry VIII the king himself founded Christ Church. The buildings date from the 12th century and were the headquarters of King Charles I during the English Civil Wars. The original shrine of St Frideswide was destroyed during the Reformation but in 2002 it was rebuilt in front of the Victorian St Frideswide window which depicts the saint’s life and her resistance to the sustained marital advances of King Algar of Mercia. A stone in the cathedral marks the tercentenary of John Wesley, founder of Methodism, who was an undergraduate at the College and ordained in the Cathedral. The picture was drawn by R. Garland and engraved by Benjamin Wilkes
