Photographer John Darwell sitting in the gallery during his resent solo exhibition at Tullie House gallery, Carlisle at which he also launched his new book. John is an independent photographer working with museums and galleries on projects that reflect his interest in social and industrial change, his concern for the environment and issues around the depiction of mental health. His work has been exhibited, and published, widely both nationally and internationally, including exhibitions in London, Amsterdam, Italy, the USA (New York, San Francisco, Berkley and Texas), Mexico, South America and the Canary Islands, and is featured in a number of important collections including the National Museum of Photography Film and Television, Bradford, the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. To date seven monographs of his work have been published with two new books released in 2007. ‘Dark Days’ based on the 2001 UK Foot and Mouth epidemic and ‘Committed to Memory’ a twenty-five year retrospective of Darwell’s work. Recent exhibitions include ‘Uneasy Spaces’ at 80 Washington Square Galleries in New York and ‘Terror’ at Intersection for the Arts, San Francisco. A retrospective exhibition linked with the ‘Committed to Memory’ book was on show at Carlisle’s Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery from May – July 07. Darwell is currently completing PhD research into the visualisation of depression for completion late 2007.
