Police officers on the concourse at central London's Victoria railway station. Britain's most senior police officer today defended the specialist firearms officers who who shot dead an innocent Brazilian man they had mistaken for a suicide bomber. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said the officers who shot Jean Charles de Menezes at Stockwell Tube station last week would have thought they faced the risk of "certain death". They "clearly thought" they were dealing with a suicide bomber, and yet they still ran towards him, he said.
