Lord Stonham, formerly Victor John Collins and one of the first 14 life peers and peeresses to be created, pictured with his sponsors when he was introduced at a special sitting of the House of Lords. His sponsors are Lord MacPherson of Drumochter (r) and Lord Wise (l). Lord Stonham had represented Shoredith and Finsbury as Socialist Member in the House of Commons since 1954.

Lord Shackleton, 47, the son of the Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton, was formerly Edward Shackleton. He has twice been a Socialist Member of Parliament. During World War II he served in the RAF and was an expert on anti U-Boat measures.

Lady Wootton, formerly Mrs Barbara Wootton, is one of the first 14 life peers and peeresses to be created. She is 60 years old and was formerly Professor of Social Studies at the University of London. A prominent socialist, she has served on the BBC Board of Governors and on a Royal Commission.
