Gerry Adams (r), the hardline Republican candidate for West Belfast, talking to fellow Sinn Fein candidate Joe Austin at the City Hall in Belfast as they waited for the results in the Northern Ireland Assembly elections. Mr Adams, the vice-president of the Provisional Sinn Fein, became the first member to be elected to the Assembly and his victory represents a major propaganda coup for the Provisional IRA.
