An undisturbed natural New England bog. A thirty-foot thick mat of sphagnum moss floats on acidic stagnant water. Usable nitrogen is scarce in bogs, so many plants have evolved carnivorous lifestyles to obtain nitrogen. Most bog plants are acidophilic or acid tolerant.
