Lewisham Council have closed Beckenham Place Park Golf Course and plan many changes to the park, against public opinion, which is strongly in favour of retaining the golf course and largely opposed to the many changes the Council want to make, using a large grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. There was a lack of proper consultation regarding Lewisham's plans for the park, the Council and the Mayor ignored the views of thousands of Lewisham residence in favour of a small Council conducted consultation where only about 400 people were asked about their views. Presently a legal challenge is being mounted in the form of a judicial review, to try and prevent Lewisham Council destroying the golf course by the Beckenham Place park Community trust.
