According Roman legend, the twin Romulus founds Rome. His brother was Remus. This illustration is from an 1864 copy of Macaulay's Lays of Ancient Rome. Their uncle Amulius had taken the throne from his brother Numitor, the father of their mother, Rhea Silvia. By the god Mars she had the twins and they overthrow Amulius. Following their victory, Romulus who is on the left here has his head on the pike. On the right is Remus with the pontiff Camers' head on a pike.
