Royal Bolton Hospital, Lancashire. 28th February 2013. The Royal Bolton Hospital is under investigation regarding 800 recorded deaths from septicaemia in the 13 months to April 2012, 4 times higher than expected in a comparable NHS Trust. Information given to Bolton NHS Foundation Trust highlights potential discrepancies in the way the Trust has coded mortality information. The Trust emphasises it does not believe there are any issues regarding clinical care but there are questions on how information about deaths is reported for administrative/financial purposes. The Trust are reported to be engaging additional staff to help investigate the problem at a time when the hospital is shedding jobs due to the need to reduce costs, having begun the financial year with a deficit of £1.9 million. The loss of up to 500 posts was announced in November 2012 in a bid to save £20 million in the current financial year and £50 million in total over a period of three years. Redgate Way was built as an additional approach to the Royal Bolton Hospital as part of the hospital extension dating from the 1990s, supplementing the original entrance on Minerva Road. The older parts of the building are late Victorian but the building has since been extensively modernised and added to and is now one of the busiest hospitals in Greater Manchester.
