Nitrate mining was a major industry in Chile's Atacama Desert from the 1860's until the early 20th century. Humberstone was founded in 1862 and was one of the busiest nitrate towns in the country. Originally named La Palma, it was renamed in 1925 after James Humberstone, its British manger who introduced the revolutionary "Shanks" refining process to the industry and was finally abandoned in 1960.
