Sandown , Isle of Wight Saturday 22nd August 2015 A LIGHT aircraft has crashed at an event marking the Second World War at the Isle of Wight Airport today. A spokesman for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said the single-engined plane crashed at the airport in Lake, before bursting into flames. No one was trapped in the plane, though it is not known if anyone was injured. It was believed the pilot pulled themselves free following the crash. Two fire engines and support vehicles from around the Island, plus police and ambulance crews were on the scene, after being called at around 10.20am. A spokesman for the Isle of Wight ambulance service said a retired member of the service and the St. John's ambulance were first on the scene. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance airlifted a man in his sixties to the trauma centre at Southampton General Hospital. No other casualties were reported, said the spokesperson. The pilot's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The spokesman for Isle of Wight Police said: "The incident was passed to the air accident investigation branch." © uknip/ Alamy Live News
