Sir Ian McKellen, British stage and screen actor joins the protest. Protesters including members of Equity actor’s union demonstrate outside the Embassy of Belarus in Kensington, London demanding the immediate release of all members of the Free Theatre of Belarus. Natalya Kalama, the Director of the Free Theatre of Belarus was arrested along with numerous other theatre members in Minsk’s Independence Square during a ruthless dispersion of a peaceful demonstration against the falsification of the 2010 presidential Belarus Election. Western countries decried the election as a farce and an egregious affront to democracy and human rights. The United States and the European Union called for the release of all the imprisoned former candidates.
